Luka i Antun Sorkočević diplomats and composers

29.07.2014 - 18.11.2014

Other exhibitions

“Luka and Antun Sorkočević – Diplomats and Composers” is the central exhibition of Dubrovnik Museums in 2014.  The exhibition and accompanying project were produced to mark the 280th anniversary of the birth of Luka Sorkočević, the first Croatian symphony composer.

The exhibition is devised in 16 thematic units that deal with the musical culture of the Dubrovnik Republic, the lives and works of Luka and Antun Sorkočević and their musical legacies, the place and role of Luka Sorkočević in Croatian and European 18th century music, and his links with distinguished contemporaries, the contribution of the house of Sorkočević to the cultural heritage of Dubrovnik and, finally, recordings and sheet music editions of their works.

All told, 139 objects are exhibited, 15 of them from the holdings of Dubrovnik Museums, and the others from 17 different institutions and individual loaners, but mostly from the Friars Minor Franciscan Monastery in Dubrovnik.

The exhibition is accompanied by a wide-ranging promotional and educational action aimed at the general public, the local population as well as tourists.  The exhibition is a continuation of the outstandingly successful series of annual central exhibition projects of Dubrovnik Museums started in 2011 with the exhibition dedicated to Ruđer Bošković, after which came the exhibitions “St Blaise in History and the Present” and “Stjepan Gradić: Father of the Homeland”.
