The exhibition has been produced by Dubrovnik Museums, Maritime Museum
The exhibition Tools and Shipwrights presents part of the collection of shipbuilding tools from the holdings of the Maritime Museum in Dubrovnik The collection contains 450 items of various kinds of tool made in the 19th and 20th centuries and used in Croatian shipyards.
The collection holds original tools that were used by the shipwrights while they were making wooden ships in the traditional way. On the whole they are objects made out of wood and metal. The tools have been recognised as valuable museum material and collected since the beginning of the work of the Maritime Museum.
The Collection of Shipyard Tools kept in the holdings of the Maritime Museum is one of the important segments of the Dubrovnik cultural heritage. Old tools constitute an important traditional cultural good and as part of the material heritage of a people are a valuable historical source that tells of the space and time in which they were used.
The rich collection of shipbuilding tools from the shipyards of Gruž shows various kinds of tool that were used by the shipwrights of the time in their work and tell of the exceptionally lively ship building industry even after the fall of the Republic of Dubrovnik. The collection is valuable not only as part of our material heritage but also as a memento of occupations that are, unfortunately, dying out.
The exhibition is showing about 200 objects, mostly of various tools, as well as models, photographs and drawings
