Themultimedia guide to the Rector's Palace in Dubrovnikallows visitors to experience the authentic center of political power of the old Dubrovnik Republic, and to explore the permanent exhibition of the Cultural and Historical Museum, which predominantly houses artistic and historical heritage of the final period of the Republic.
Since its creation, the Rector's Palace has been the most important public building in Dubrovnik. It was the meeting place of central government authorities and a magistrate office, the heart of city diplomacy and a place to hold receptions, ceremonies and solemnities. The Palace also held an armory, a courtroom, a prison, as well as residences of both a locksmith with his family and the duke , while its atrium served as a public square.
The Rector’s palace is one of the most important cultural monuments of the highest category in Croatia and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List along with the entire historic town center. It has housed the Cultural and Historical Museum since 1950.
The permanent exhibition partly relies on ambient design and helps illustrate the authentic historical setting of the Palace. The most representative exhibits from the museum's rich collection speak of the way of life in the Republic of Dubrovnik and its important artistic, scientific, economic, social, medical and political achievements.
