Collection of traditional attire from Konavle

The collection has more than a thousand objects, among which the oldest and finest are sets of male and female garments from the second half of the 19th century, down to the first half of the 20th century.

One of the most valuable parts of the collection is a set of female attire for festive occasions complete with hondelj, a special type of traditional female headgear from Konavle of which there are few surviving examples.

As well as sets of clothing, there are also valuable examples of silk embroidery, breast panels and sleeves, which are separate parts of female wear that were appliquéd onto shirts, and from which it is possible to track the continuity of silk embroidery from the oldest techniques of the second half of the 19th until the middle of the 20th century.

The collection also holds other parts of male and female wear, as well as very valuable specimens of male and female jewellery in gold and silver, created mainly in the workshops of local, Dubrovnik, goldsmiths. The finest specimens of clothing are on show in the permanent display.
