The collection of photographs and photographic materials has more than three thousand objects, more than two thousand of them being photographic prints, with hundreds of negatives on glass, several photographic albums and photographic equipment (cameras and lenses). Most of the photographs are from the second half of the 19th century, with somewhat fewer from the first half of the 20th century. The prevailing subject is the portrait. Only a smaller number of the photographs immortalise some significant event from the not so distant Dubrovnik past, the city’s monuments and everyday events.
A large number of photographers who had studios in the town are represented. Particularly worth mentioning are Tomaso Burato, Silvino Mascarich, Angelo Luzzena, Antonio Jellasca, Philipp Deng, Antun Miletić, Cesare Damiani, Josip Berner and Enrico Perich. Alongside the photographs of Mascharich is his studio camera with a Voigtländer lens made in Vienna at the end of the 19th century.
