The exhibition has been produced by Dubrovnik Museums, Maritime Museum
With its selection of museum objects the exhibition adds colour to the picture of the invention and development of nautical instruments through history, with particular reference to Dubrovnik and its area.
In the 14th century Dubrovnik, coming after Genoa and Venice, was the third biggest maritime power in the Mediterranean.
In the 16th century, the Dubrovnik Republic had a merchant marine that was the biggest in the Mediterranean, and in number of ocean-going merchantmen, flying Dubrovnik or foreign flags, Dubrovnik was third in the world, after Spain and the Netherlands.
The holdings of the Maritime Museum in Dubrovnik have two Davis quadrants, 16 octants, 12 sextants, an inclinometer and other navigational instruments.
